China has stepped up its crackdown on counterfeit agricultural products, with authorities imposing strict penalties—including lengthy imprisonment—for offenders.

Recent cases released by the Supreme People’s Court and Supreme People’s Procuratorate highlight crimes involving fake seeds, pesticides, and fertilisers. Offenders used deceptive tactics such as selling old seeds as new and mislabelling products to defraud farmers.

In a major case, a man surnamed Liu was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined 1 million yuan after falsely marketing medicinal seeds to farmers. His actions led to widespread crop failure and losses exceeding 13 million yuan.

Authorities emphasised that such crimes pose serious risks to food security and farmers’ livelihoods. They reaffirmed their commitment to tough enforcement, including prison sentences and heavy fines, while urging farmers to verify suppliers and report suspicious products.
